What is Raices?
Raices is CCHS’ Grassroots Community Engagement Initiative. When CCHS develops affordable housing in a community, we seek partnerships with the City, the schools, and the residents. CCHS’ goals are for individual empowerment, family strengthening, and community transformation. Raices embodies our “community transformation” goal by facilitating community efforts from advocacy and political engagement opportunities to community park projects!
Mabton Community Park
Currently, our Raices Initiative is focused on the Mabton Community Park (MCP). Mabton is a 2,286-person rural community, located just south of Sunnyside in the Yakima Valley of Central Washington. The MCP concept originated several years ago when CCHS began its first-time homeownership program in Mabton, but the specific park efforts began in November of 2010. Since then, CCHS and the Mabton community have designed, fundraised, and constructed different park features which include walking paths, a natural playground, volleyball courts, soccer field, skatepark, picnic shelter, amphitheater, trellis, and water feature.
